Eirik Gjedrem
Eirik Gjedrem (b. 1959, Ås) lives and works in Søgne, Norway. He works primarily with ceramics, and throughout his artistic practice, he has explored a deep fascination with water and its connection to the subconscious. The movements and depths of the ocean mirror the inner landscapes of the human psyche, forming a central theme in his work. Water symbolizes an eternal force – constantly moving through all forms of life – and serves as a metaphor for change, flow, and interconnectedness. Clay, Gjedrem’s material of choice, shares many of water’s characteristics: plasticity, transformation, and sensitivity. The presence of water is essential to the clay’s ability to be shaped and altered. Pierced surfaces, layered glazes, and vibrant colors create an illusion of depth, reflecting the multifaceted nature of water. Texture, contrast, and movement lend his works a dynamic, living, and weightless quality. Gjedrem is particularly drawn to the unique physical and mental state experienced underwater. Diving is both a source of inspiration and a daily ritual – a morning practice that brings focus, clarity, and often solutions to artistic or technical challenges. He also gathers materials directly from the sea, such as seaweed and kelp, which he uses to create imprints or as textural elements.
