August Sandberg - Noe holder meg våken (Something Keeps Me Awake)
August Sandberg is quickly becoming a prominent figure in the Norwegian contemporary art scene. His latest exhibition at SKOG (5 - 22 September 2024) , titled "Noe holder meg våken," reflects the restlessness that drives his creativity. Just as these works keep him awake, they promise to stir your emotions as well, with their raw portrayal of human vulnerability—a theme that deeply resonates with the audience.
Drawing inspiration from the changing seasons and vibrant colors of his Norwegian homeland, Sandberg's art beautifully captures the essence of both human and non-human nature. An emotional highlight in his collection is the inclusion of unfinished gray paintings by his late father, which Sandberg completed, transforming them into powerful collaborations that bridge the past and present.
Known for his introspective approach, Sandberg’s work offers a deep dive into his thoughts and emotions. Growing up in an artistic family in Oslo, his journey has been profoundly shaped by his father, a talented painter who remains a significant influence. This connection infuses Sandberg’s work with a rich sense of heritage, adding depth and meaning to his already compelling pieces. August Sandberg’s art not only reflects his personal history but also taps into universal human experiences. As he continues to evolve, his impact on the contemporary art world is undeniable. For those who appreciate the blend of personal narrative and universal themes in fine art, Sandberg’s work is a must-see.
About the exhibition in SKOG Sandberg says: «I work intuitively, rarely with a plan. Pictures are created from a state of mind, where thoughts, feelings, fragments of dreams and memories become central to the process. The subconscious also helps shape the expression in the paintings. I revolve around the deeper theme of existence, the meaning of life and death, the vulnerability of being human, the relationship between the spiritual and what we apparently understand, around grief, loneliness and loss.”
August Sandberg is from Oslo, and studied at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen. His most recent exhibition at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design (KiB)
